LOCAL COMMUNITY MOURNS DEATH OF POPULAR COUNCILLOR

Tributes are being paid online to local Councillor Sharyn Wheale today after her death from a long illness last week.

The popular figure served on Hampshire Country Council, Hart District Council and Fleet Town Council for a total of over three decades and was a well known face at local events. Councillor Steve Forster, friend and colleague of Cllr Wheale, paid tribute to her:

“This is such sad news: Sharyn Wheale was a true community champion. She has represented residents in Fleet, Hart and Hampshire incredibly effectively. It was a joy working alongside her. I will miss her close friendship, sage advice, and wonderful sense of humour.”

Councillor Wheale was an enthusiastic figure who could often be seen helping to organise local events from the Fleet Carnival to the Christmas Festivities. Here she can be seen supporting “Autism Friendly Fleet” in 2018. Local Hart candidate for Fleet West and Elvetham Heath Parish Councillor Mohua Chakraborty, pictured with her below, remembers her fondly:

“It’s a sad loss, for residents of Fleet, and me personally. Cllr Sharyn Wheale, was an extraordinary person, a leader, a guide, and a beautiful friend. I will miss her forever.

Councillor Wheale was also passionate about preventing the development of Gurkha Square. Here she can be seen in the heart of the square with fellow Councillors including Stephen Parker and Steve Forster in 2017.

Cllr Stephen Parker:

“I have known Sharyn for over thirty years, mostly as a fellow councillor and for some years for the same ward. Her contribution to Fleet was outstanding, holding her constituent surgeries on her way round Waitrose! I will miss her not just as a colleague but as a much loved friend.”

Tim Burt (Fleet Crookham and District, The Royal British Legion):

“A fine Lady who selflessly devoted so much of her time to the residents of Fleet and Hart. An example to all those in office. Farewell Sharyn and Thank You.”

Mike Collen (Fleet Lions):

“What a loss. Sharyn was so dedicated to the Fleet community, full of energy, ideas, enthusiasm and fun. It has been a pleasure working with Sharyn over the years with Christmas and Food festivals and many other projects that benefitted our Community. So sad to lose her.”
