ROAD RAID IN FLEET

It’s not uncommon to see warnings of van thefts, catalytic converter thieves or a dodgy scammer or two wandering around the High Street but it isn’t very often that you see a series of missing manhole (person hole?) covers in your local headlines.

The covers went missing on the evening of the 3rd March, along with a number of metal drains, in Guildford Road, Farnham Road and Avondale Road, leaving some rather nasty and potentially dangerous holes in their wake – it is thought that over twenty were been taken in the late night road raid.

The scrap metal thieves are thought, unsurprisingly, to have used a white van for their mobile crime spree and requests have been put out for any dash cam or video doorbell footage which might have caught the dodgy characters and their (presumably rather heavily laden) vehicle on camera. Any footage you might have should not be posted online but instead passed straight to the police.

If you happen to spot any additional missing covers, please report these online to Hampshire Highways Operations Centre.

So if you plan to have a few pints this weekend and are planning on a gentle wander home, keep your eyes peeled…or the earth really could move for you…
