NEW CHARITY SHOP AND FLATS

COMING SOON TO FLEET ROAD

EMPTY UNIT TO BE FILLED

It’s a busy time for Fleet High Street with the “Eat Out to Help Out” Scheme filling all the local restaurants, followed yesterday by the start of the newly pedestrianised road…but the changes don’t stop there.

The old Poundworld Plus Store (formerly Iceland) at 189 Fleet Road, has been standing empty since July 2018 but is now due to be converted into a British Heart Foundation charity shop.

There is already a British Heart Foundation store in Fleet but the new and much bigger unit will be a ‘Home’ store which will specialise in larger items such as furniture and white goods, so it’s possible both stores will remain.

Plans have been submitted and approved for the changes to the new store with signage at the front of the building and a drop off and collection point at the rear.

But it isn’t just the ground floor that’s going to see some changes in the near future…

TEN NEW FLATS

While plans to revamp the ground floor are underway, the levels above the shop are also undergoing a facelift and change of use, as they are currently in the process of being converted from storage space, to ten flats.

The five studio flats and five two bedroom flats were initially granted planning permission back in 2018, with changes to the building going largely unnoticed, but this now appears to have been tweaked and finalised. The flats will cover the area above the Blue Cross charity shop, over the new British Heart Foundation unit and across to McDonalds, from 187 to 191 Fleet Road.

The plans for the buildings show the changes in the roof area and windows at the front of the building, some of which have already been completed.

New windows have already been fitted to the front of the new flats and lights were seen on inside the new charity shop yesterday so it doesn’t look like we’ll have a long wait for the new arrival.

Are you looking forward to having a new charity shop in town? By having a different focus it will be somewhat different to the ones that already exist in Fleet Road. But will it have any affect on the Fleet Lions charity that also collects furniture, or will it be a case of the more the merrier? At the very least, it’s always nice to see an empty unit filled, especially in these challenging times.
