Sad news today as Fleet loses a popular local business in what are very hard and trying times. Loaf Bakery, who own branches in Farnham, Four Marks and Godalming have made the decision not to keep their Fleet branch running. It is not known if this is completely because of the pressures local businesses find themselves under with the coronavirus situation but it’s certainly a struggle for many small shops.

A statement from Loaf read:

Sadly we have decided, in light of the current situation, not to continue to trade in Fleet.  We have been forced to evaluate our business operation generally in order to prepare ourselves for the future post virus which has been an extremely challenging and traumatic time for us as a business as well as personally.  I am sure that we are not alone in having to make changes going forward and after five years in Fleet it was with heavy hearts that we arrived at the decision to close permanently as our lease was due for renewal.

We do thank you sincerely for your past custom and hope that you may find yourself in either Farnham, Godalming or Four Marks near Alton where we are still open and  hope to welcome you.”

The closure will come as a shock to many, as there had been no announcement of it either on their website or social media, in fact the only signs on the building were to confirm the business would stay open and practice social distancing. However the bakery is currently being cleared of its stock and fittings, as the closure was confirmed and moves were made to clear the building.

The other branches of Loaf will be staying open, so if you don’t mind a slightly longer journey, you can still visit the business. The closure will leave a big unit to fill in the Hart Centre and with businesses struggling to survive right now it may be a while before it’s filled again.

Stay Safe Fleet x
