MEN’S SHED CELEBRATES NOMINATION

Most of you will have already heard of the Church Crookham and Fleet Men’s Shed and their amazing work in the local community. Now their hard work is being recognised nationally as they have been shortlisted for “Community Project of the Year” at ShedFest, the national conference for Men’s Sheds in the UK and home of the Shed of the Year Awards 2022.

So what is a Men’s Shed? It is described on the main website as…

Sheds are about meeting like-minded people and having someone to share your worries with. They are about having fun, sharing skills and knowledge with like-minded people, and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. As a by-product of all of that, locally we want to reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, allowing men to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent.”

‘This year is the first year back since 2019 and the field of nominations is incredibly strong’, said John Latchford, Chairman of UK Men’s Sheds Association. ‘I Congratulate Church Crookham & Fleet Men’s Shed for the quality of their nomination and this is why we shortlisted them for the award. My sincere best wishes to them and all the Sheds this year – it is a really exciting field’.

The successful nomination came in the form of a model train and was the brainchild of Peter Vincent, President of Fleet Rotary Club as well as a “Shedder”. It was used as a static display during Christmas 2021 to raise funds for local good causes and at the end of this month the trailer and train will come into Church Crookham and Fleet Men’s Shed ownership. You will be able to see it at the upcoming Fleet Carnival parade, as well as at the next Christmas Festivities.

Allan Walker, Chairman of Church Crookham and Fleet Men’s Shed said:

With over 600 Mens Sheds now in the UK, being shortlisted is a great achievement for the “shedders” in its own right and great testament to those that were involved in the making of the nominated project.”

The Men’s Shed plans to expand its membership by refurbishing a second building on their site and adding another shed to host new members from its ever growing waiting list. Councillor Steve Forster of Hampshire County Council recently approved a £6500 grant for the project, stating that it would go “towards extra facilities at ‘the shed’“. This was also supported by Cllr Stephen Parker, who is the county councillor for Church Crookham and Ewshot.

Men’s Sheds reduce loneliness by 96%, anxiety by 75% and depression by 89%. 97% of Shedders make new friends on joining a Shed and 88% feel more connected to the community.

ShedFest 2022 and the Shed of the Year Awards 2022 are taking place this year at the University of Worcester Arena on the 25th June, 2022.
