READERS LETTER FROM NICKI
SUBJECT: PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Dear For Fleet’s Sake!,
As a non driver I feel there is one major part of the local infrastructure that has been overlooked and definitely needs addressing . The unreliability of local public transport. Although we do have great train links to London, so therefore the whole country, getting around the actual place I live is awful.
Although the bus into Fleet goes every 30 minutes it is persistently late or it doesn’t turn up at all. It also doesn’t cover quite a few areas of Church Crookham and Fleet, confining many residents to using more expensive convenience stores and isolating them from family and friends. It doesn’t link up well with the train timetable either, causing either a long wait to get home, an expensive taxi ride or a long walk. As someone who works 12 hour shifts none of these are ideal.
The last bus of the day is of no use to someone going out for the evening, forcing them into either driving or using the quite expensive local taxis. Recently there has been a lot of discussion about attracting more people to our town but with the appalling public transport service it would just force more cars on to our very congested and frankly crumbling roads.
We are often encouraged to use public transport more often, to help protect the environment and reduce the congestion on our roads, but it needs to be reliable and affordable to all. The local community is growing quickly and the need for decent, reliable public transport is growing with it and not something that should not be overlooked.
