AGGRAVATED BURGLARY IN CROOKHAM VILLAGE STORES AND POST OFFICE - 24/08/19

BREAK IN AFTER RECENT CLOSURE OF STORE

After the sad recent closure of the local Crookham Village General Stores and Post Office, the beleaguered building has today been the focus of a mindless burglary as three men entered the store and demanded keys to the post office from the family that still lives there.

The break-in happened around 4.30am as the intruders, who had their faces covered and one of which carried a crow bar, smashed their way into the local stores and demanded the post office keys from the owner, who refused to hand them over. He was then assaulted and received a “few punches” and a cut to his face.

POLICE HELICOPTER SEARCH

A police helicopter was later seen flying over the Fleet area, followed by uniformed officers in the Tavistock Road region, conducting house to house enquiries and enquiring about a person of interest who might have been seen running from a silver BMW. This appears later to have been updated to be a “silver coloured Ibiza or similar type vehicle”.

SUSPECTS

The suspects have been described as white and aged between 25 – 35 years old. The official police statement states…

“One man stood 6ft tall and was wearing a khaki coloured hooded top and a dark neck warmer that covered his face. Another man is described as being 5 feet 10 inches and wore a dark grey hooded top with a black neck scarf over his face. The other was smaller, about 5 feet 6 inches and was in a dark coloured top.”

Although officers were despatched to the scene and searched the area, no suspects were located. Police ask that anyone with information about the attempted robbery call 101 and quote “44190300452”.

PLEA FROM OWNERS

After the distress of losing their home and business, the current owners/residents of the building were understandably upset and made this impassioned plea for help on their Facebook page:

POLICE APPEAL

APPEAL FOR WITNESSES AFTER AGGRAVATED BURGLARY IN CROOKHAM VILLAGE

With an apparent increase in crime in the local area, the lack of local police and the switching off of the street lights between 1 – 4am (it is thought the lights were still off when the burglary occurred), it has left many residents asking just what is happening to our area and if this is a trend that’s set to continue.
