LOCAL RESIDENTS WARNED TO AVOID FAKE CHARITY COLLECTION

A warning was given out by a member of the For Fleet’s Sake Facebook group today, regarding scammers operating in Fleet High Street. He said…

“1.45 p.m. today – scam in the high street. I was approached in Upper Street by a young plump Eastern Mediterranean woman about 5 ft tall who pretended to be deaf, wearing a black puffa jacket and black leggings. She pushed a clip board in front of me which reads across the top something about building a deaf centre asking for a cash donation of £10 or £20. I refused to give her money.

I followed her to the high street where she started talking to another woman of the same ethnicity wearing an identical puffa jacket but slim and about 5′ 6″ tall. I tried to grab the clip board off her and shouted to a man to phone the police. They ran off down Upper Street with the man in pursuit.

10 minutes later I spotted the slim one going into Sainburys with a swarthy slim man about the same height. The police are now out looking for them and are reviewing the CCTV.

There have been two very dodgy looking swarthy men hanging around the entrance to the Hart Centre all morning. I assume they are operating as a gang. Be on your guard.”

“I went to the Council offices and talked to the police who said they had sent two people out to look for them and identify them from CCTV. They haven’t phoned me back yet. There’s no doubt that they were committing a fraud. The girl claimed to be deaf but clearly wasn’t and when the man phoned the police they ran off.”

Other local residents have also said that these people have targeted shoppers outside the Morrisons store on Elvetham Heath.

Fleet police have been contacted for comment.

UPDATE 11/11/19

UPDATE: Fleet Police confirm they are looking into the fake charity workers, stating…

“Units were deployed but unfortunately they had left prior to our arrival. If they are seen again please report it. PCSO 16146 BALES”.
