CROOKHAM VILLAGE STORES BIDS A FINAL FAREWELL
NEWS ON THE GO!
It’s a sad day for the Crookham Village Stores, as the battle to keep the local business afloat fails at the final hurdle.
The forced closure of the Crookham Village Post Office, Tearooms and General Stores was announced back in June as the owner of the property decided to sell the popular community outlet.
With the managers of the property and the local community still reeling from the shock closure, the stores were to suffer yet another shock when they were the victims of an aggravated burglary on the 24th September, which resulted in an attack on the couple that still lived in the property.
There finally appeared to be a glimmer of hope however, when the local Parish Council applied for the stores to be made an Asset of Community Value, which was approved. This also gave the local community first refusal on the purchase of the property if it were sold and there were hopes it could be run as a voluntary, locally run store.
As the owner had already expressed his desire to sell the property, this was put to the local people to find backers to purchase the project. But despite all efforts, there were ‘no expressions of interest” received, leaving the unlucky store now open to be openly sold, with fears by some that it may be snapped up by a developer.
A sad end to a long fought battle but well done to all those who tried.
