A Bandstand For Fleet?

by For Fleet's Sake

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ONE?

Last year we discussed the idea of having a bandstand in Fleet, on our Facebook group. The proposal seemed a popular one and if placed on The Views, would offer a location similar to the popular Gostrey Meadow in Farnham, which is known for its regular music events throughout the summer months. Indeed there has long been calls for Fleet to echo the event and do something similar themselves.

Moving forwards, the idea seems even more relevant today, as social distancing and outdoor events work together to form a safer environment for everyone. Recently, the Harlington – which is closed and unable to host events currently – decided to arrange events similar to Farnham’s by introducing “Socially distanced Sundays in the Park”. While the title isn’t quite what we’re used to, the premise behind the event is that people can enjoy live music at The Views with a licensed bar and space to take their own picnic. Seating areas are arranged in ‘bubbles’ that have been marked on the grass, to allow correct social distancing based on group size.

The appeal of a bandstand works on many levels, it could offer a platform for people of all ages to perform on and provide a classic and timeless structure to be used to feature music of all kinds, from brass bands and modern music to choirs and children’s performances. It could be used as a focal point for events, giving a host/announcer a place to present upcoming acts and could be used to enhance events already held there. Local am-dram groups, schools, local bands and how about a Christmas carol concert?…it would allow for all this and so much more without the hassle of planning and erecting a different stage every time (which would also invariably mean most smaller events couldn’t afford to do it).

Indeed the possibilities are endless and with venues like the Harlington struggling during the covid crisis, it could offer an opportunity to increase much needed footfall into Fleet, increasing revenue for the town, while giving it a boost that is long overdue.

With funds currently piling up in the council reserves for a new build Harlington, which we have been told is no longer an option, surely a fraction of this could be spent on something that would offer the venue greater flexibility in future as well as adding community appeal?

So what do you think? Do you think a bandstand should grace our town and add a touch of class to Fleet? We currently have a poll open in our Facebook group to gather your opinions – just click here to see the poll and vote and don’t forget to add your comments below!
